Classes offered
Syracuse University offers undergraduate classes on all levels in German, including a minor and major in German. Every semester, classes from the beginner’s level to the advanced level are offered. In GER 101 to GER 202, students acquire basic to intermediate language skills and an insight into the culture and literature of German-speaking countries. Upper-level classes provide in-depth insight into the literature and culture of German-speaking countries and further develop the language skills of students.

Placement Test
Students with more than one year of high-school German are required to take the placement test before the start of registration each semester (for exact date, time and place contact the Program Coordinator)

Major and Minor in German
For a minor in German, students are required to take at least 18 credits, including GER 202 and five other courses taught in the target language. At least four of the five courses are in the upper division. The major in German consists of GER 202 plus eight upper-division courses taught in the target language.

Study abroad
To become fluent and to experience life in a German-speaking country, students are encouraged to study abroad. SU works together with the FU-BEST program at Freie Universität Berlin, Germany and students can study either one or two semesters in Berlin. For more information, go here.

Learning Community
Students of the German have the option to stay with other interested students in the Languages, Cultures and Arts Learning Community. This Learning Community gives students the opportunity to join like-minded students in the exploration of different cultural and linguistic topics through discussions, visits of art exhibitions, theater plays and other cultural events, film series and more. Activities take place in the culturally diverse community of Syracuse as well as NYC. The application process is through the Housing Reservation Process. State your wish to live in the LCA Learning Community.
