The study of Japanese at Syracuse University provides basic competence in speaking, reading, and writing. Four 4-credit courses are offered through Intermediate Japanese, using the highly acclaimed textbook Yookoso. Supplementary 1-credit conversation courses are also offered at two different levels. In addition, a 1-credit advanced grammar and reading course is provided for those students who have completed the JPS 202 course.

  Study Abroad

To become more fluent in Japanese and to gain additional insight into the Japanese culture and its people, students are encouraged to study abroad. For further information, contact the Japanese Language Program Coordinator, Lewis S. Josephs, or the Division of International Programs Abroad (Click Here).

  Teaching Assistanceships

In the Department of Languages, Literatures, and Linguistics we have available annually up to three Teaching Assistantships in the Japanese Language for students applying to our Graduate Program in Linguistic Studies. Teaching Assistantships provide a stipend for living expenses, full waiver of tuition (for a maximum of 24 credits per academic year), and other benefits. The major duties of each Teaching Assistant revolve around teaching one 4-credit, 6-hour language course per semester. In addition, an Assistant may be asked to teach a 1-credit, 1-hour conversation or grammar course. Classroom hours, office hours, time required for course and materials preparation, and other activities requested by the East Asian Languages Coordinator may result in 20 hours of work weekly.

We currently teach two levels of Japanese (JPS 101-2 and JPS 201-2) for a total of four 4-credit, 6-hour courses. In addition to four hours in class, students are required to spend two hours doing computer-assisted instruction or working with audio-visual materials or videocassettes. We also teach a 1-credit, 1-hour advanced conversation class and a 1-credit, 1-hour advanced grammar class each semester.
