In May 1991
SU began a 2-year initiative between Syracuse University and Apple Computer, Inc.
to enhance teaching and learning through the use of computing technology. By integrating
computing into the largest components of the undergraduate curriculum (Mathematics;
Languages, Literatures, & Linguistics; and the Writing Program) the University
began an effort to facilitate active learning and to understand better how teachers
could use computing technology in instruction, research, and scholarship.
The project's objectives meshed exceedingly well with the University's vision
of a "student-oriented research university," and the numerous deliverables
achieved in the project's first year demonstrated significantly how to improve instruction,
to encourage student personal growth, and to integrate research into undergraduate
instruction. The first multimedia-capable lab was installed on SU's campus.
The Lab
consists of 22 Macintosh G3 computers, with headphones for listening to audio, and
with Microphones to record your own audio. There are also Laserdisc players, VCRs,
and CDRoms to view media in those formats. Each computer is networked, with access
to the Internet. There are also video connections in the room for access to campus
cable, local TV stations, and special satellite-delivered instruction & newscasts
like CSPAN & SCOLA. There is also an Apple Scanner, LCD color projection and
audio speaker capability, and access to a Zip drive, slide scanner, digital camera,
document camera, and color printer and laserprinter capability.
