Multimedia Services Manager
The Manager of the HBC Computer Labs is responsible for the computer operations in the Department of Languages, Literatures, & Linguistics. Primary responsibilities include the consistent availability and reliable operation of all multimedia systems, providing advanced computer technical support, and administering servers, computer labs, and client (desktop) computers. The Manager provides technical consultation for instructional environments, oversees development and delivery of multimedia materials, and gives assurance of high quality technical service and support.
In addition to an extensive technical background, including a thorough knowledge of multi-media technologies and experience with system maintenance and troubleshooting, the manager is experienced in staff and resource management, curriculum development, and integrating the use of computer technology in teaching and research.
Specific Responsibilities and Duties
- Function as a multimedia expert for LLL, maintaining a multimedia self-service production lab for faculty, staff, and technology specialists
- Coordinate multimedia resources in LLL and be familiar with specialized applications
- Administer 3 departmental network servers-Novell, Webserver, and Pacerforum
- Manage 217 HBC Language Lab, consisting of 29 computers, 2 printers, & networking
- Manage computer operations in LLL, ~60 desktop/laptop machines, 5 printers
- Oversee multimedia equipment, TVs, VCRs, tapeplayers, projection & LCD devices, scanners, cameras, audio mixers/speakers/mics, etc.
- Administer educational technology systems and applications (60 +)
- Evaluate LLL computer equipment and materials, and oversee maintenance & repair
- Monitor computer technology costs &expenses, recommend expenditures
- Resolve complex building networking issues (e.g. subnet hubs, TCP/IP, ethernet hosting)
- Work with CMS and A&S to achieve university objectives for campus computing
- Interpret and apply university computing policies in department & labs
- Provide input for strategic computing decisions that affect department & college planning
- Work closely with and negotiate with CMS (NSS) on issues that affect policy for implementing & supporting computing (e.g. email, and Macintosh support issues)
- Manage workstudy consultant staff (5 each semester) responsible for daily operations, maintenance, and end-user support of multimedia facilities
- Hire, train, define tasks for, and supervise and evaluate performance for those staffProvide written materials and managerial guidance to support consultant staffPrepare and manage budget recommendations for technology-related purchasesPrepare specifications for funding proposals, annual technology budget requests, auditsAct as liaison between LLL and CMS to coordinate networking issues, liscening, etc.
- Troubleshoot and repair hardware and software breakdowns
- Install new and replacement equipment
- Assist faculty/staff in designing & implementing computer-based teaching projects (e.g., Big Chalk)
- Assist LLL faculty in getting connected to university LAN from home via modem
- Apply expert knowledge of multimedia computing concepts & practices
- Monitor computer security systems (including locks, doors, alarms, etc.)
- Oversee compliance for Novell Netware upgrades, Win95+, and Mac OS system upgradesDevelop forms, databases, and records for LLL technology equipment
- Establish lab policies, hours of operation, and network operations (e.g. printing)
- Identify technology training needs across patron constituencies and ensure training meets needs
- Deliver workshops and demonstrate teaching applications (MSWord, etc) and software to faculty, instructors, & students.
- Foster use of computer resources, and coordinate development of teaching tools
- Provide management for multimedia and Internet-related projects, directing all phases from conception through storyboarding, development, and deployment
- Administer the LLL website (lang.syr.edu)
- Explore the feasibility and realize the potential of technological advancements in language media field, and evaluate their technical implementation in LLL
- Supervise writing of LLL technical-specific user documentation, guides, & tutorials
- Develop educational computing in LLL in relation to its institutional environment; do research, development, & classroom testing
- Keep informed about developments in the field of computers & language learning by reading, attending professional meetings or workshops, joining conference forums, and remain up-to-date on industry trends
- Establish working relationships with colleagues within/without the UniversityParticipate in listserves & newsgroups & other forums to continually improve knowledge of academic technology
- Develop pedagogical strategies for teaching language with computers and related technologies
- Participate in LLL staff development & curriculum development groups activities
- Assist in LLL dissemination through campus events, conferences, and professional meetings
