Kathryn Everly, Assistant Professor of Spanish

Kathy Everly has published Catalan Womoen Writers and Artists: A revisionist View from a Feminist Space (2003) with Bucknell University Press. Her articles have appeared in Revista monografica, Letras peninsulares, Hispanic Journal and Catalan Review. She is at work on a second book about representations of violence and history in contemporary narrative. She has analyzed Ray Loriga's film and narrative in chapters in the book collections Gen X Rocks (Vanderbilt 2007) and The contemporary Extreme (Continuum 2006). Her other research interests include historical narrative, women writers, and popular culture. Professor Everly was asked to guest edit a special issue on Symposium on post-Franco literature that was published in the summer of 2004. She is an active member of the North American Catalan Society, Asociacion Internacional de Literature Femenina Hispanica, Instituto Cervantes and the MLA.

Kathy Everly teaches a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses. She created two new 600-level Master's courses entitled Sinners and Saints: Women and Religion in 19th and 20th Century Spanish Literature and Gender and Violence in 20th Century Spanish Novel and Film. The first course stems from a need within the program for coverage of 19th century texts. Both courses incorporate feminist theory into discussions of more traditional theoretica l orientations, such as structuralism, and brings to light current debates concerning postmodernism and cultural studies. Professor Everly has revised SPA 321, Introduction to Spanish Literature by starting the course in the 20th century rather than adhering to the traditional chronological approach. This allows the students to familiarize themselves with contemporary issues of Spanish culture that may be more pertinent to their own lives. Professor Everly includes poetry, film, t heater, narrative and essay in her SPA 301 course Approaches to Reading Literature as this allows students to explore a wide variety of literature and find an interest to pursue. Professor Everly often teaches outside of her speci alty (20th century peninsular narrative) in order to assure that the program covers the necessary material for majors, minors and master's students. She enjoys working with students and has directed several Master’s theses.
